Ingredients

Onions
  • 2 large sweet onions Choose sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla for the best flavor.
  • 1 cup buttermilk Helps tenderize the onions and adds a rich taste.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Base for the coating that gives the onions their crispy texture.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Adds a savory depth to the flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder Enhances the onion flavor even more.
  • 1 teaspoon paprika Provides a hint of smokiness and color.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Essential for bringing out the flavors.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Adds a touch of heat and complexity.
  • 1 cup vegetable oil For frying, ensuring the onions become crispy and golden.

Equipment

  • deep skillet or frying pan

Method

  1. Peel the outer skin off the sweet onions and slice them into 1/4-inch rings. Place the onion rings in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Let the onions soak for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Dredge each soaked onion ring in the flour mixture until well coated.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat until it reaches about 350°F. Fry the coated onion rings in batches for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Use a slotted spoon to remove the rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Sprinkle with extra salt while still hot and serve warm.
