- Prepare the coffee mixture by brewing 2 cups of strong coffee and letting it cool. Mix in coffee liqueur if desired.
- Make the mascarpone mixture by whisking egg yolks and sugar until pale and creamy, then fold in mascarpone cheese.
- Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form and fold into the mascarpone mixture. Whip heavy cream with vanilla extract and fold into the mascarpone mixture.
- Layer soaked ladyfingers in a 9x13 inch dish, alternating with mascarpone mixture.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 240 minutes, preferably overnight. Dust with cocoa powder and add chocolate shavings before serving.
